Theory of Operation

The PR6424/012-000 CON011 system operates on the eddy current principle. The sensor contains a coil that generates a high‑frequency electromagnetic field. When a conductive target (such as a rotating shaft) enters this field, eddy currents are induced in the target surface, which in turn alter the impedance of the sensor coil. This impedance change is directly proportional to the distance between the sensor tip and the target surface.

The CON011 signal converter supplies the sensor with a high‑frequency excitation signal and continuously monitors the resulting impedance changes. It converts these changes into a calibrated DC voltage output proportional to the probe‑to‑target gap (static displacement) and an AC voltage output proportional to dynamic vibration. The converter provides outputs protected against short circuits, open circuits, and reverse polarity.

The system is factory‑calibrated to AISI 4140 (42CrMo4) ferromagnetic steel, with a sensitivity of 4 V/mm and a linear range of ±2.0 mm. The sensor’s PEEK tip and stainless steel housing ensure durability in harsh environments, while the PTFE‑insulated cable maintains signal integrity across the full –35°C to +150°C operating range. With ATEX/IEC-Ex intrinsic safety (ia) certification, the system can be installed in hazardous areas when connected through appropriate safety barriers.
