The 1756-BA1 is a lithium primary battery from Rockwell Automation, purpose-built for memory backup in ControlLogix Series A L6x controllers. The 1756-BA1 preserves user programs, tag databases, and configuration data when system power is lost or during controller removal. With 0.59 grams of lithium metal, the 1756-BA1 provides extended data retention for 1756-L61/A, 1756-L62/A, and 1756-L63/A processors. The 1756-BA1 plugs directly into the controller's PCB via a dedicated connector, enabling tool-free replacement. When installed in accordance with product guidelines, the 1756-BA1 maintains program integrity across power cycles and controller swaps, ensuring seamless operation in critical automation applications.
Precision Application Engineering – Specifically matched to ControlLogix Series A L6x controllers, ensuring reliable memory retention without compatibility concerns or adapter requirements.
Plug-and-Play Replacement – Connectorized interface eliminates soldering or terminal block modification; replacement can be completed in minutes without specialized training.
Trusted OEM Source – Manufactured to Allen-Bradley quality specifications, providing predictable service life and performance consistency across production batches.
Lithium Content Compliance – 0.59 grams per battery facilitates simplified transport and disposal under DOT and IATA regulations compared to higher-lithium-content alternatives.
Standardized Disposal Pathways – Universal waste classification in most US states simplifies end-of-life management and reduces compliance burden.
Legacy Support – Enables continued operation of installed ControlLogix Series A systems, delaying costly platform migration while maintaining program integrity.
Extended Data Retention – Preserves processor memory contents during power interruptions, controller removal, and scheduled maintenance
Series A L6x Compatibility – Specifically designed for 1756-L61/A, 1756-L62/A, and 1756-L63/A controllers
Direct Plug-In Connector – Dedicated battery connector enables quick, tool-free installation and replacement
Mechanical Retention – Positive-lock battery holder secures cell against shock and vibration
Long Shelf Life – Up to 10-year storage capability in original packaging under recommended conditions
Hazardous Location Capability – Suitable for Class I Division 2 installations when replaced in non-hazardous areas per safety guidelines
Wide Temperature Operation – Reliable performance across typical industrial temperature ranges
High Lithium Purity – Uses premium-grade lithium metal for consistent voltage and current delivery throughout service life
Allen-Bradley Quality – Manufactured to stringent OEM standards for performance and reliability
Installation Procedure
For SLC 5/01, 5/02 and Fixed Controllers:
Open the processor door without removing power from the controller
Locate the battery holder and connector socket (refer to battery location diagram)
If installing a battery in a new controller that has never had a battery installed, remove the jumper from the battery connector socket and store it in a safe place for possible future use without the battery
Insert a new battery into the holder, ensuring the retainer clips secure it properly
Plug the battery connector firmly into the socket
Close the processor door
For SLC 5/03, 5/04, and 5/05 Processors:
Remove power from the SLC 500 power supply
Press the retainer clips at the top and bottom of the module and slide the processor out of the chassis
Unplug the battery connector from the PCB
Remove the old battery from the retaining clips
Insert the new battery into the retaining clips
Plug the battery connector into the socket
Reinsert the processor into the chassis and restore power
Q1: Which controllers are compatible with the 1756-BA1?
A1: The 1756-BA1 is designed exclusively for ControlLogix Series A controllers: 1756-L61/A, 1756-L62/A, and 1756-L63/A. For Series B controllers and other processor variants, use the 1756-BA2 battery.
Q2: What is the battery life expectancy of the 1756-BA1?
A2: Under normal operating conditions at 20–25°C ambient temperature, the 1756-BA1 typically provides 3–5 years of service life. Battery life may be reduced at elevated temperatures or with frequent power cycling.
Q3: Can the 1756-BA1 be recharged?
A3: No. The 1756-BA1 is a primary (non-rechargeable) lithium cell. Attempting to recharge it may cause overheating, rupture, or explosion, resulting in personal injury or equipment damage. Replace only with a new unit.
Q4: How should depleted 1756-BA1 batteries be disposed of?
A4: Depleted 1756-BA1 batteries should never be incinerated or discarded in general waste. In most US states, they can be disposed of as universal waste through authorized battery recyclers. Contact your local EPA office or consult state and local regulations for specific requirements.
Q5: Can the 1756-BA1 be replaced while the controller is powered on?
A5: For SLC 5/01, 5/02, and fixed controllers, battery replacement can be performed with processor power applied. For SLC 5/03, 5/04, and 5/05, it is recommended to remove processor power and extract the processor from the chassis before replacement to prevent static damage. In all cases, the replacement area must be non-hazardous per Class I Division 2 requirements.
