Description

The UR6TH is a digital I/O expansion module engineered by GE Multilin for the Universal Relay (UR) Series. The UR6TH provides eight high‑voltage digital inputs and four Form‑A relay outputs, all electrically isolated from the backplane to withstand harsh substation environments. Installed directly into a UR chassis slot, the UR6TH expands field connectivity for breaker status monitoring, alarm indication, and trip/close command issuance. With < 4 ms output activation, hot‑swappable design, and full integration with EnerVista UR software for configuration and diagnostics, the UR6TH is an ideal companion to UR protection relays when additional I/O channels are required.

Applications

Breaker trip/close command distribution and position status feedback

Alarm annunciation, interlocking logic execution, and substation auxiliary monitoring

Motor protection, generator control, transformer and feeder management

Industrial automation, SCADA/DCS digital signal acquisition and command output

Turbine control, compressor station monitoring, and power distribution automation

Features

8 contact inputs, 4 Form‑A outputs: Provides a balanced 2:1 DI/DO ratio, ideal for supervisory control applications where monitoring points outnumber command points.

Ultra‑fast output response (< 4 ms): Digital outputs activate in under 4 ms, meeting stringent timing requirements for protection tripping and high‑speed interlocking.

High electrical isolation (>2000 Vrms): Galvanic isolation between channels and from the backplane blocks surge transients and ground loops common in high‑voltage substations.

Hot‑swappable backplane plug‑in: Module can be inserted or removed while the UR relay remains powered, enabling field maintenance without system shutdown.

Software‑configurable I/O mapping: Input debounce filtering, output pulse widths, and interlocking logic are fully programmable via GE EnerVista UR software.

Per‑channel LED status indicators: Dedicated LEDs for each input and output channel provide immediate visual confirmation of field signal states and relay energisation.

Wide environmental tolerance (–40°C to +70°C): Engineered for extreme outdoor substations, turbine enclosures, and unheated industrial control cabinets.

Over‑range input protection (optical isolation): Input circuits are optically isolated; if the current source is reversed or falls below the low end of the range, the module outputs a default safe data word, and the A/D converter will saturate at full scale for out‑of‑range inputs (>20 mA).

Low power consumption (10 W typical): Minimal thermal load on the UR relay chassis backplane, allowing multiple modules to be stacked in the same rack without overheating.

Full EnerVista UR integration: I/O configuration, channel diagnostics, fault logging, and real‑time status monitoring are all managed through the same software used for UR protection relays, eliminating separate tools and reducing engineering effort.

Functions

Expands the UR relay‘s field I/O capacity by adding eight optically isolated digital inputs and four Form‑A relay outputs to the chassis backplane.

Converts field contact closure signals (e.g., breaker auxiliary contacts, limit switches, pushbuttons) into digital status data for the UR CPU‘s protection logic, event recording, and SCADA reporting.

Executes FlexLogic‑generated trip and control commands by energising or de‑energising the four Form‑A outputs, directly driving annunciator panels, solenoid valves, indicating lamps, and interposing relays.

Provides electrical isolation between external field wiring and the relay‘s internal logic via optical barriers and galvanic isolation, preventing ground potential differences and surge transients from damaging sensitive processing electronics.

Reports diagnostic conditions (open circuit, stuck relay, channel fault) back to the UR CPU over the backplane; any detected anomaly triggers an annunciator alarm and is logged in the relay‘s event recorder for forensic analysis.

Protects input circuits from reversed current or under‑range signals by outputting a default data word (0000H in %AI) for low‑end conditions, and saturates the A/D converter to full scale (7FF8H in %AI) for out‑of‑range inputs (>20 mA), ensuring reliable operation even under abnormal field conditions.

Supports hot‑swap replacement: when a UR6TH is removed, the UR CPU detects its absence and continues normal operation of all other chassis modules; upon reinsertion, the CPU reloads the stored configuration and resumes I/O scanning without a system restart.

Allows external SCADA systems to read input statuses and force output states via standard industrial protocols (IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3), bridging field I/O to the relay‘s communication stack.

Stores configuration data (I/O assignments, output default states, debounce filters) in non‑volatile memory, retaining settings through power cycles and even when the module is physically removed.

Receives +5 V DC (27 mA typical) and +24 V DC from the backplane; the main power source is derived from the isolated +24 V DC supplied by the PLC power supply, which is routed through an inverter/regulator to produce the operating voltages for the module.

FAQ

Q1: What is the UR6TH used for?
A1: The UR6TH is a digital I/O expansion module that adds 8 contact inputs and 4 Form‑A relay outputs to GE Multilin UR series relays, extending field connectivity for breaker control, annunciation, and status monitoring.

Q2: How many input and output channels does the UR6TH provide?
A2: The UR6TH provides 8 digital input channels (dry/wet contact compatible) and 4 Form‑A non‑monitored relay output channels.

Q3: How fast are the outputs on the UR6TH ?
A3: The Form‑A outputs on the UR6TH have an activation time of less than 4 ms, meeting high‑speed control timing requirements for protection tripping and circuit breaker failure protection.

Q4: Is the UR6TH hot‑swappable?
A4: Yes, the UR6TH supports hot‑swap installation. It can be inserted or removed while the UR relay chassis remains powered, allowing field maintenance without system interruption.

Q5: What software is used to configure the UR6TH ?
A5: The UR6TH is configured using GE‘s EnerVista UR Setup software, providing graphical I/O mapping, FlexLogic programming, real‑time status display, and diagnostic access through a single interface.
