Description

The T8151B is a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) communications interface module from ICS Triplex‘s Trusted platform, serving as a secure gateway between the safety controller and external systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA, engineering workstations). The T8151B offloads communication tasks from the TMR processor, supporting Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherNet/IP, and Trusted peer-to-peer protocols. The T8151B features dual redundant 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports and four isolated serial ports (RS-232/422/485 configurable). With hardware-implemented 2-out-of-3 voting and SIL 3 certification, the T8151B ensures continuous, fault-tolerant communication for safety-critical applications.

Theory of Operation

The T8151B functions as the communications gateway for the Trusted TMR safety controller. It contains three independent Fault Containment Regions (FCRs), each with its own NXP PowerQUICC II processor, memory (EPROM, DRAM, Flash), and voter logic. The three processors operate synchronously, executing communication tasks independently while a 2-out-of-3 (2oo3) read permission voting mechanism continuously compares and validates data across all three regions.

The module receives data from the TMR processor via the Trusted backplane and translates it into standard industrial protocols (Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherNet/IP, Trusted P2P) for transmission to external systems such as DCS, PLC, SCADA, and engineering workstations. Conversely, it receives commands from external systems, validates them through the 2oo3 voting mechanism, and forwards them to the TMR processor for execution.

Redundant Ethernet ports provide network fault tolerance, while the four serial ports support legacy device integration. The front-panel diagnostic port enables remote system configuration and troubleshooting without interrupting core safety functions. The module‘s independent processing power offloads all communication overhead from the main TMR processor, ensuring deterministic scan times for safety logic execution.
