Theory of Operation

The 10208/2/1 functions as a 10‑channel relay output interface within the Honeywell FSC system. Upon receiving logic‑level control signals from the processor via the 5 Vdc and 24 Vdc backplane supplies, the module energises or de‑energises its ten individual relays accordingly. Each channel provides a potential‑free normally open contact, meaning the relay contacts are electrically isolated from the module's internal circuitry and from each other. This allows the user to switch different voltage levels (up to 30 Vac or 36 Vdc) across different channels without interference.

The relays are controlled not only by the application logic but also by the system watchdog. If the system shuts down or the processor enters a fault state, the watchdog signal de‑energises all relays, forcing the outputs to a safe de‑energised condition. This fail‑safe behaviour is critical for ensuring that field devices do not remain energised during system faults.

Inductive loads such as solenoids and relays generate voltage spikes when de‑energised. The 10208/2/1 does not include internal suppression diodes, so external diodes must be mounted across the load to protect the relay contacts and extend their operational life. The contacts are constructed from gold‑flush silver‑cadmium oxide, a material that provides excellent resistance to welding and arcing, ensuring reliable switching over thousands of operations.

The module draws 25 mA from the 5 Vdc supply and 120 mA from the 24 Vdc supply. The WDG input requires 4 mA to monitor the watchdog status. Key coding (holes A9, C17 on the module; large pins A9, C17 on the rack) prevents incorrect module insertion, protecting both the module and the system from damage.
