The MVI56-DFCMR is a DF1 serial communication module from ProSoft Technology, engineered to connect Rockwell Automation ControlLogix processors to DF1 protocol-compatible devices using a reduced data block format ideal for remote rack installations. The MVI56-DFCMR mounts in a single 1756 chassis slot and features two independently configurable serial ports supporting RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 interfaces. Each port can be configured as a DF1 Master or Slave. The MVI56-DFCMR provides up to 5,000 registers of user data storage and supports up to 100 commands per Master port. With 500V optical isolation and Class I Division 2 certification, the MVI56-DFCMR delivers reliable DF1 connectivity for remote ControlNet or Ethernet applications.
Remote I/O Applications – Ideal for ControlNet or Ethernet applications with the module in a remote rack, using a small I/O data area for data transfer
SCADA Systems – Pipeline and offshore platform data concentration and monitoring
Foreign Device Data Concentration – Aggregating data from multiple DF1 devices to a ControlLogix processor
Power Monitoring – Interfacing with Rockwell Automation power monitors (RS-485 half-duplex, DFCM as Master)
HMI Integration – Connecting PanelView HMIs (full-duplex point-to-point, DFCM as Slave)
Process Control – Food processing, mining, pulp and paper applications requiring DF1 communication
Single-slot, 1756 backplane compatible; supports local or remote rack
Reduced data block format (42-word I/O data area) for remote rack efficiency
Two application serial ports, independently configurable as Master or Slave
Supports RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 interfaces (jumper-selectable)
Full and half-duplex DF1 protocol support
CRC and BCC error checking
Full hardware handshaking control for radio, modem, and multi-drop support
Up to 5,000 registers of user-definable module memory
Up to 125-word read and write command lengths
Up to 100 commands per Master port with configurable polling
Floating-point data movement support
500V optical isolation on application ports
Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D hazardous location certified
Includes sample ladder logic for rapid integration
The MVI56-DFCMR functions as a gateway between the ControlLogix processor's backplane and the DF1 network. Unlike the standard MVI56-DFCM, this module uses a reduced data block format (42 words) for data transfer, making it ideal for remote rack installations where smaller I/O data areas are required.
Data Transfer: The module communicates directly over the ControlLogix backplane using input and output images (42 words each) and MSG instructions. Data is paged between the module and the processor, with the module filling data in the input image to send to the processor, and the processor inserting data in the output image to transfer to the module.
Master Mode: The module issues read or write commands to slave devices on the DF1 network based on a user-defined Master Command List of up to 100 commands per port. Each command specifies the target device, function code, register address, and data count. Commands can execute continuously or be triggered by ladder logic.
Slave Mode: The module responds to DF1 commands from a master device, reading from or writing to its internal database. It supports Basic, PLC-5, and SLC-500 command sets.
Configuration: The module receives configuration data from the ControlLogix processor via Block IDs 9000 (Backplane), 9001 (Port 1), and 9002 (Port 2). Command lists are transferred using blocks 6000-6033 (Port 1) and 6100-6133 (Port 2).
