The T8310 is a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Expander Processor Module from ICS Triplex‘s Trusted platform, serving as the critical slave interface between the Trusted controller chassis and expander chassis. The T8310 extends the high-bandwidth Inter-Module Bus (IMB) beyond a single chassis using UTP or fiber optic cabling. With HIFT (Hardware Implemented Fault Tolerant) TMR architecture, the T8310 provides 3-2-0 fault tolerance and automatic fault containment. Hot-swappable and SIL 3 certified, the T8310 ensures continuous, safe operation in critical applications like ESD and F&G systems.
TMR Fault Tolerance – 3-2-0 HIFT architecture eliminates single points of failure; the system continues operating after one or two faults without compromising safety.
Hardware-Implemented Fault Tolerance – Dedicated hardware and software test regimes provide very fast fault recognition and response times.
Hot-Swappable – Supports online replacement without system shutdown.
Long-Distance Expansion – Supports up to 30 m with copper or 10 km with fiber optics, enabling geographically distributed I/O.
Automatic Fault Handling – Manages faults without nuisance alarming, maximizing system availability.
SIL 3 Certified – IEC 61508 certified for safety-critical applications.
The T8310 resides in the leftmost processor slots (PL1/PL2) of the Trusted expander chassis and functions as the slave interface between the Expander Bus and the expander chassis backplane. It extends the Internal Module Bus (IMB) beyond the confines of a single processor chassis, enabling scalable, multi-chassis safety systems.
The module employs a TMR architecture with three independent processing units executing in lockstep; a voting mechanism ensures the correct output is selected even if one unit fails. Communication between the expander processor and the TMR processor occurs via the triplicated Expander Bus, which comprises separate command and response media per channel. Voting at the expander bus interface tolerates cable faults, allowing the remainder of the processor to operate in fully triplicated mode.
The T8310 also provides fault containment for the Expander Bus, the module itself, and the expander chassis, ensuring potential faults are localized. It generates IMB power and clock signals for the expander chassis, monitors the 24V supply, and forwards control signals and messages between chassis. Comprehensive diagnostics continuously monitor power rails, memory integrity, communication pathways, and voting logic.
Q1: What is the primary function of the T8310?
A1: The T8310 serves as a TMR Expander Processor that extends the Trusted system‘s IMB beyond a single chassis, providing a slave interface between the expander chassis and the controller chassis.
Q2: What is the difference between the T8310 and standard TMR processors?
A2: The T8310 is specifically an expander processor designed to increase I/O handling capacity and distribute processing load across multiple chassis, whereas standard processors like the T8111 serve as primary controllers.
Q3: Can the T8310 be replaced without shutting down the system?
A3: Yes, the T8310 supports hot-swappable replacement, allowing online module changes without interrupting system operation.
Q4: What communication distances does the T8310 support?
A4: Up to 30 meters with TC-301 copper cable, and up to 10 kilometers using T8314 Fiber TX/RX units.
Q5: What safety certification does the T8310 hold?
A5: The T8310 is SIL 3 certified per IEC 61508, suitable for use in safety instrumented systems (SIS).
