The MVI46-MBP is a Modbus Plus communication module from ProSoft Technology, engineered to connect Rockwell Automation SLC 5/02 and newer processors directly to Modbus Plus networks. The MVI46-MBP mounts in a single 1746 chassis slot and exchanges data asynchronously between the SLC backplane and the Modbus Plus network via a 4,000-word internal register space. Supporting both Master and Slave functionality, the MVI46-MBP enables seamless peer-to-peer communication with Modicon PLCs, drives, relays, and other ModConnect-licensed devices. With dual redundant Modbus Plus ports and comprehensive diagnostic features, the MVI46-MBP delivers robust and flexible industrial networking.
Direct SLC Integration – Single-slot 1746 form factor with M0/M1 file data transfer eliminates external gateways and complex wiring.
Master and Slave Support – Operates as both a Modbus Plus master (issuing commands) and slave (responding to requests) simultaneously, providing maximum application flexibility.
Dual Port Redundancy – Two DB9 Modbus Plus ports support redundant network operation; if the primary network fails, the secondary automatically takes over.
Asynchronous Data Exchange – SLC processor scan is independent from Modbus Plus network activity, preventing communication delays from impacting control performance.
Comprehensive Diagnostics – Built-in debug port and data analyzer allow real-time monitoring of all Modbus Plus messages for rapid troubleshooting.
True Interoperability – Compatible with Modicon PLCs and a wide range of ModConnect-licensed devices, bridging Rockwell and Schneider ecosystems.
User-Friendly Configuration – RSLogix 500 integration with example ladder logic and simple I/O card ID (13635) setup reduces engineering time.
Single-slot 1746 backplane compatible module; remote rack not supported
Dual DB9 Modbus Plus application ports for redundant network connectivity
RJ45 Configuration/Debug port with included RJ45 to DB-9 adapter cable
Up to 100 master commands with conditional and continuous polling
Front-panel LEDs: module status, backplane transfer, application, serial activity/error
Event-driven command control from ladder logic
Pass-through mode for Modbus Function 5, 15, and 16 commands
Hot-swappable? No – power must be removed before insertion or removal
The MVI46-MBP functions as a gateway between the SLC processor‘s backplane and the Modbus Plus network. Upon power-up, the module initializes hardware and waits for configuration data from the SLC processor via the M1 file. Once configured, it enters an infinite loop executing four parallel tasks: Global Input, Global Output, Slave Driver, and Master Driver.
Data Transfer: All register data between the processor and module travels through the M1 file. Ladder logic uses COP instructions to move data between user-defined data files and the M1 file. The M0 file is used for special command control from ladder logic (e.g., command enable/disable, pass-through control).
Master Mode: The module issues read (Function 3) or write (Function 16) commands to other nodes on the Modbus Plus network based on a user-defined Master Command List of up to 100 entries. Each command specifies the target device (via Device Definition File), function code, register address, and data count. Commands can execute continuously or be triggered by ladder logic via event control bits.
Slave Mode: The module responds to Modbus read (Functions 1, 2, 3, 4) and write (Functions 5, 6, 15, 16) commands from other nodes, directly reading from or writing to its internal database.
Global Data: The module exchanges up to 32 words of global input and 32 words of global output data with other nodes on the network for high-speed control data transfer.
Configuration: The module requests configuration from the processor by setting register 4370 in the M1 file to 9000. Ladder logic copies configuration data (General Configuration, Global In File Map, Device Definition, Master Command List) to the module, then sets register 4370 to 9001 to confirm completion.
