Description

The 3511 is a high-performance pulse input module from Triconex, engineered for the Tricon Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Safety Instrumented System (SIS). The 3511 provides eight non-commoned, AC-coupled differential input channels optimized for non-amplified magnetic speed sensors on rotating equipment such as turbines and compressors. The 3511 employs a 2-out-of-3 (2oo3) voting architecture—each of three isolated channels processes data independently, with the Main Processors voting to ensure the highest integrity. With 16-bit resolution and ±0.01% accuracy, the 3511 delivers precise frequency and RPM measurements for overspeed protection, emergency shutdown (ESD), and critical speed monitoring applications

Installation & Wiring

  • Chassis Mounting – Install the 3511 module into a designated slot of the Tricon backplane. The module supports hot-spare replacement, allowing replacement without system shutdown.

  • Termination Panel – The 3511 requires a 9753-110 basic termination panel. For nonincendive applications, use the 9793-110 panel.

  • Field Wiring – Connect pulse input signals from magnetic sensors, proximity switches, or pulse transmitters to the termination panel. Each of the 8 input channels is non-commoned.

  • Unused Points – Unused input points must be shorted together to prevent false triggering.

  • Cable Length – For lengths greater than 15 meters (50 feet), use individually shielded twisted-pair wire to prevent point-to-point crosstalk.

  • Sensor Type – Compatible with non-amplified magnetic speed sensors, proximity sensors, and pulse transmitters.

Features

  • Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) – Three isolated processing channels per module with 2-out-of-3 (2oo3) voting architecture ensure fault-tolerant operation

  • 8 High-Sensitivity Inputs – Provides eight non-commoned, AC-coupled differential pulse input channels

  • High Precision Measurement – 16-bit resolution with ±0.01% accuracy from 1,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz; pulse count resolution down to 1 microsecond

  • Wide Frequency Range – Captures signals from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, supporting diverse rotating equipment speeds

  • Versatile Signal Compatibility – Accepts sine, square, and pulse waveforms with 10% to 90% duty cycle

  • Robust Protection – ±150 VDC continuous overrange protection and wide common mode range (–100 VDC to +100 VDC)

  • Comprehensive Diagnostics – Continuous per-channel diagnostics with PASS, FAULT, and ACTIVE status indicators

  • Hot-Spare Capability – Supports online module replacement without system downtime

  • SIL 3 Certified – TÜV/FM certified for safety-critical applications per IEC 61508

Theory of Operation

The 3511 functions as a high-frequency pulse acquisition interface within the Tricon TMR safety architecture. Each of the eight input channels senses voltage transitions from magnetic sensor input devices and accumulates them within a selected time window (rate measurement). The resulting count is used to generate a frequency or RPM value, which is transmitted to the Main Processors.

The module employs Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) : each input channel is processed by three independent isolation channels. Each channel independently processes all input data and passes it to the Main Processors, which perform 2-out-of-3 (2oo3) voting to ensure the highest data integrity. This architecture eliminates single points of failure—a fault in any one channel cannot corrupt the final data, and the module is guaranteed to operate properly in the presence of a single fault.

The AC-coupled differential inputs reject common-mode noise in electrically noisy environments. The module provides complete ongoing diagnostics on each channel; failure of any diagnostic activates the Fault indicator and chassis alarm. The Fault indicator merely indicates a channel fault, not a module failure. The module does not provide totalization capability—it is optimized specifically for measuring the speed of rotating equipment.

FAQ

Q1: What is the frequency range of the 3511 pulse input module?

A1: The 3511 accepts pulse signals from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz). Accuracy is ±0.01% in the 1,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz range.

Q2: How many input channels does the 3511 provide?

A2: The 3511 provides 8 independent, non-commoned pulse input channels. Each channel is AC-coupled and balanced differential.

Q3: What termination panel is required for the 3511?

A3: The 3511 requires a 9753-110 basic termination panel. For nonincendive applications, use the 9793-110 panel. Unused points on the panel must be shorted together.

Q4: Does the 3511 support hot-swap replacement?

A4: Yes. The 3511 supports hot-spare capability, allowing the module to be replaced without shutting down the system.

Q5: What is the TMR architecture of the 3511?

A5: The 3511 uses Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) with three independent processing channels per module. A 2-out-of-3 (2oo3) voting mechanism ensures fault-tolerant operation—if one channel fails, the other two continue to provide correct data. The module is guaranteed to operate properly in the presence of a single fault.
