The T8310C is a Trusted TMR Expander Processor Module that serves as a high-availability, fault-tolerant slave interface between the Expander Bus and the Expander Chassis Backplane. This T8310C module resides in the processor slots of the Trusted Expander Chassis and enables multiple chassis systems to be implemented using Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable connections while maintaining fault-tolerant, high-bandwidth Inter-Module Bus (IMB) capabilities. The T8310C features Triple Modular Redundant architecture with Hardware Implemented Fault Tolerant design and comprehensive diagnostics for rapid fault identification. With hot-standby and module spare configurations supported, the T8310C enables both automatic and manual repair strategies.
3-2-0 Fault Tolerance – TMR architecture ensures continuous operation through single or multiple faults, with graceful degradation down to a single healthy channel
HIFT Architecture – Hardware Implemented Fault Tolerant design provides deterministic fault response with extremely fast recognition and reaction times
Companion Slot Redundancy – Two adjacent processor slots in the chassis configured for active/standby operation with automatic failover
Long-Distance Expansion – Supports up to 30 m copper UTP or 10 km fibre optic expansion, enabling remote I/O chassis deployment
Hot Replacement – Modules can be replaced without system shutdown in redundant configurations, minimising downtime
Byzantine Voting – Advanced voting mechanisms at both Expander Bus and IMB interfaces ensure fault masking and data integrity
Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Architecture – Lock-step configuration with three independent fault containment regions (FCR A, B, and C)
Hardware Implemented Fault Tolerant (HIFT) Design – Dedicated hardware and software test regimes providing very fast fault recognition and response times
Expander Bus Interface – Triplicated point-to-point architecture with separate command and response media per channel; voting ensures cable fault tolerance
Inter-Module Bus (IMB) Interface – Identical to Controller Chassis IMB, providing fault-tolerant high-bandwidth communications at up to 12.5 Mbps
Active/Standby Operation – Automatic negotiation between two Expander Processor Modules; left-most module defaults to Active when both are healthy
IMB Power Generation – Three independent power supplies via diodes to the IMB backplane; failure of any supply does not affect the remaining supplies
24 V Supply Monitoring – Continuous monitoring of each 24 V supply with status information accessible by the TMR Processor
Comprehensive Diagnostics – Receive error counters, link quality monitoring, frame error and checksum error detection per link/FCR
Front Panel LED Indicators – Healthy (per channel), Active, Standby, and Communications Activity LEDs for rapid status assessment
Module Polarisation/Keying – Factory-fitted keying prevents insertion into incorrect chassis positions
The T8310C operates as a fault-tolerant slave interface, extending the Inter-Module Bus (IMB) capabilities from a single Processor Chassis to multiple Expander Chassis systems. The module is built around three independent fault containment regions (FCR A, B, and C) arranged in a lock-step TMR configuration. Each FCR contains interfaces to the Expander Bus and IMB, active/standby control logic, communications transceivers, and independent power supplies.
In normal operation, the active Expander Processor Module receives command messages from the TMR Processor Chassis via the triplicated Expander Bus. These messages are re-synchronised and majority-voted (Byzantine voted) before being forwarded to the Expander Chassis IMB. Similarly, response messages from I/O modules within the Expander Chassis are received via the IMB, re-synchronised, voted, and transmitted back to the Expander Bus. Messages addressed to the Expander Processor Module itself are handled locally, with appropriate response messages generated. The module also forwards critical control signals including Power Failure Warning, System Watchdog, and Command Response Control in a fully triplicated manner.
The module derives its internal voltages from dual redundant +24 Vdc power supplied via the module connector from the Trusted Expander Chassis Backplane. Each FCR generates required supplies independently, with three independent IMB power supplies provided via diodes to the backplane. Failure or overload of any single supply does not affect the remaining supplies.
Active/Standby control is managed locally through negotiation between two Expander Processor Modules installed in companion slots. Interlocks ensure both modules cannot assume Active mode simultaneously. When both modules are healthy, the left-most module defaults to Active operation. The standby module monitors communications and can assume Active status automatically upon failure detection. Hot replacement is supported, allowing faulty modules to be removed and replaced without system shutdown. Comprehensive diagnostics continuously monitor Expander Bus link quality, receive error counts, frame errors, checksum errors, and 24 V supply levels, with all status information accessible to the TMR Processor for fault reporting and maintenance planning.
